Egan Bernal has been discharged from Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogota and has begun rehabilitation and recovery at home from 20 fractures.
The Colombian hospital released a photo of Bernal standing with medical staff with the announcement that Bernal could leave the hospital. Bernal, of the Ineos Grenadiers, was hospitalized for 14 days after colliding with a station bus while training on a time trial bike.
Bernal admitted that he was dying and had a 95 percent chance of becoming a paraplegic. It is unclear how long it will take for him to fully recover.
"I almost killed myself. But I thank God for letting me pass this test. It will be the toughest race, but I had great people around me," Bernal wrote in a recent Instagram post.
"So now to recover and make this another ...... I'M BACK!!! and let's rock."
Bernal also confirmed that he suffered 20 fractures, including 11 ribs, and holes in both lungs. He underwent three surgeries to fix his fractured femur and kneecap and stabilize his thoracic and cervical vertebrae.
In the pictures he was wearing a neck brace, but with a thumbs up.
"At this point, the patient is in the third stage of trauma and is ready to begin rehabilitation. There are no complications and all injuries are stable and in the process of recovery," Clínica Universidad de La Sabana said in a medical update.
"We are pleased to report that today a patient has been discharged to continue his rehabilitation on an outpatient basis at our clinic, the first clinic in Colombia to receive rehabilitation accreditation from the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international agency .
"Today, we give greater meaning and strength to the words we hold up as our mission at our institution. With pride and hope, we begin a new stage of our work with our athletes."
