Filippo Ganna aims for Classics, Tour de France and Hour Record in 2022

Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) has made it clear that he is targeting Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, and the hour record in 2022.

Moser achieved all of these goals during his long career from 1973 to 1988. Using the new physiological methodology introduced by Professors Francesco Conconi and Dr. Michele Ferrari, and breaking the hour record held by Eddy Merckx on an aero bike equipped with disc wheels, he revived his career in his 30s, winning Paris-Roubaix three times in a row and in 1984 He also won the Giro d'Italia.

Ganna has denied the possibility of one day attempting to win the Giro d'Italia overall, but is inspired by Moser's accomplishments.

"I never thought my career would be like his, but it would be a pleasure for me to have a similar career.

"Moser has made history and no one will ever come close to him. But to emulate him and come close to what he accomplished would be huge in today's sporting world. When I visited his country home, saw his trophies and heard about his career, I was amazed. He was always complimentary of me.

Ganna made his season debut at Etoile des Besseges, winning the final time trial on Sunday.

He will return to France this week for the Tour de la Provence and then the UAE Tour, where he looks to win again in the time trial stage. He is expected to ride Paris-Nice to get a taste of French roads for the Tour de France, then target Milan-San Remo, perhaps a power attack in Poggio, and Paris-Roubaix, which he won as an under-23 rider in 2016.

Ganna, who has won the Giro d'Italia seven times in the past two years, will miss his home Grand Tour in order to win the first yellow jersey at the Tour de France in Copenhagen.

If Ganna, who contributed to Ineos Grenadier in the Tour de France, regains his form, he will challenge for the hour record in Manchester if the pressure is right at the end of the summer. Despite Victor Campenaerts (Lot Soudal) setting a record of 55.089 km at high altitude in Mexico, Ganna has always said he would aim for the Hour Record at sea level.

"So far, no news on that. I'm concentrating on the spring first," Ganna said, noting that he lays out his goals and focuses on each one.

"If I do compete, it will definitely be after the Tour, that is, in the summer. I haven't decided on the velodrome yet, but I like the conditions to be low pressure and high sea level."

Ganna finished the 2021 season in October but is eager to race again, hence he has added the Tour de la Provence to his program and hopes to help fellow track rider and Italian Elia Viviani in the sprint.

"I'm hungry for racing," he said.

"It was good to win the time trial. It was good to win the time trial after the bad luck of Carapaz crashing during the race and of course Egen Bernal.

"I was in better shape on the final climb of the time trial than on the flat sections. That's a good thing, because this year we will face a lot of climbs, not just time trials.
