Peter Sagan's Total Energy (opens in new tab) and French pro team B&B Hotels p/b KTM (opens in new tab) join Alpecin Phoenix and Arkea Samsic, who had already earned automatic qualification in last season's UCI rankings, The final two wild card teams (opens in new tab) to the 2022 Tour de France. The 18 WorldTour teams will automatically qualify for the 22-team Tour de France peloton.
With this decision, the Total Energy team, led by Jean-Rene Bernadeau, will now have competed in the Tour every year since its creation as Bonjour in 2000. The team is aiming for promotion to the World Tour in 2023 and reformed this winter with the addition of Peter Sagan.
B&B Hotels p/b KTM will return to the Tour for the third consecutive year. The team, led by Jérôme Pinault, moved its main man Brian Coquard to Cofidis this winter; Alexis Gujard, who moved from AG2R, became the team's main signing during the off-season, while Pierre Rolland, the best young rider at the 2011 Tour, remains on the roster remains on the roster.
Norwegian professional continental team Uno-X had a clear shot at a Tour wildcard invitation this year after a strong 2021 season; with no less than eight Danish riders on the roster, the team hoped to be on the start line at the Grande Parle in Copenhagen. But general manager Jens Haugland said last month, "The chances are not that great, because we have a lot of riders who are not going to be able to compete in the Tour.
Instead, and as expected, ASO followed the trend of recent years and chose two French teams to occupy the two slots at their disposal.
Since 2017, Intermarche Wanty (now automatically included in the Tour as a WorldTour team) is the only non-French team invited to the Tour by the ASO. Alpecin Phoenix, another Belgian team, qualified this year and last year depending on their UCI ranking.
