"It gave me good confidence for the road race. I got off to a good start and hopefully it will be a good start to the year for me."

Williams ran the women's 32.5km route, including the Te Milo climb, in a winning time of 46:08, 1:57 ahead of second place Bronwyn McGregor (Cabuyax Castelli Custom) and 2:31 ahead of third place Holly Edmondston (Mid-South Canterbury). Down.

The elite men also faced wet conditions, with last year's U23 winner Finn Fischer-Black crashing early on and UAE Team Emirates teammate George Bennett finishing in seventh place, 2:30 behind.

"I wasn't expecting something like that. I was very happy to be on the podium. I tried not to push too hard, to do my own race. I listened to my body," Gough said.

"It will be very cool to wear the national jersey when I go abroad with Black Spoke. I may have to do a few more time trials. It's been a while since I've done a time trial.

"Riding a time trial bike and racing against the clock has always been in Gough's blood. Time trials are something special.
