Specialized has launched Helmet Amnesty at its stores in the UK, offering a 50% discount on a new MIPS helmet when you trade in your old one.
Unfortunately, unlike some high-tech products, even the best road helmets do not have an infinite lifespan, no matter how well cared for. As they are exposed to UV rays, general use, and minor impacts, the shells weaken and, as a result, the amount of protection they offer is reduced. Specialized recommends replacing helmets after three years.
As of February 14, you can trade in your old helmet and receive up to 50% off the MSRP of a new Specialized helmet. This applies while supplies last and is only available in-store, but is not exclusive to Specialized Concept Stores and is available at all Specialized retailers (except Evans Cycles).
Discounts vary depending on the helmet purchased, with the highest discounts available on the Specialized Prevail II Vent, Specialized Ambush (opens in new tab), and Ambush Comp models, which offer 50% off MSRP.
In addition, a 30% discount off MSRP will be applied to the Specialized Gambit, Mode, Specialized Propero III, Mio MIPS, Echelon II MIPS, Chamonix MIPS, Centro LED, and Align II.
All helmets available under this scheme are MIPS-equipped, so if you are considering purchasing a MIPS helmet, now may be the perfect time to switch. The scheme also means that the benefits of increased safety that the MIPS system claims to add will be available at a wide range of prices, whereas previously they were reserved for more advanced riders.
