Cyclone has introduced the Aeroshade Kunken, a pair of sunglasses with unique features that are sure to divide the pros and cons. The new Aeroshade Kunken is loaded with features in a dizzying array of frame and lens combinations. Most impressive are the optional monogrammed lenses, which are available in a variety of colors, including.
Cyclone's Aeroshade Kunken, like all the best cycling sunglasses, features large panoramic lenses that provide maximum field of vision. Unlike the original Aeroshade model, the lower half of the lens has no frame, theoretically allowing the rider to see more. The "Horizon Adapt" nosepiece allows the wearer to adjust the field of view up or down by 10% by moving the nosepiece. The nosepiece is also adjustable in width, and several size options are available, with an Asian fit. [The design follows that of the Scicon Aerowing Lamon worn by Tadei Pogachar at the Tour de France. The top center of the frame is subtly raised from the lens, known as the "panoramic arch." This should also have the side benefit of improving airflow.
The lenses are UVA and UVB resistant and have been impact tested in case of a high-speed collision with a rock while riding. The frames are also made from "ecologically produced bio-based materials" to reduce the carbon footprint of their manufacture. Details on this point are somewhat vague, but if confirmed, it is encouraging to see environmental considerations in a product that uses so much plastic.
The Aero-Shade Kuncken is available in eight standard lens shades, including clear and photochromatic, but it is worth noting that two monogrammed lenses have been added to the standard lenses. The silver and red lenses are monogrammed with the Scicon logo on the front.
This is a purely aesthetic choice that is likely to divide opinion, but given that the glasses were tested by various World Tour teams over the winter break and will be unveiled at the UAE Tour later this month, it is safe to assume that they will not adversely affect the wearer's vision. In addition, professional teams using Scicon eyewear will have team-specific monograms, perhaps opening an untapped avenue for placement of sponsor logos.
The Aeroshade Kunken comes with everything one would expect from a high-end pair of cycling sunglasses, including a soft case that doubles as a lens wipe, a carry case, and clear lenses for riding in the dark (although not all sets come with them). If you don't find something you like among the 30 combinations of frames and lenses, Scicon offers spare frames, lenses, and nose pieces so you can build a custom set to your liking.
The Scicon Aeroshell Kunken will sell for between £158/$215 and £184/$249, depending on lens and frame combination.
