Lizzie Banks has been forced to postpone her debut at EF Education-TIBCO-SVB on Thursday at Setmana Ciclista Valenciana due to a positive COVID-19 test. Banks is experiencing mild symptoms from the virus and is being quarantined in Calpe, Spain.
"Lizzie Banks will miss Volta Comunitat Valenciana due to a positive COVID-19 test. She has been quarantined in a hotel room in Calpe and will follow the guidelines set forth by the Spanish health authorities. Banks is currently showing mild symptoms," EF Education-TIBCO-SVB confirmed.
Banks was scheduled to join the team for the season opener, Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, February 17-20, but was replaced by teammates Emily Newsom, Lauren Stevens, Omer Shapira, Veronica Eworth, Katrin Hammes, Sarah Poidevin, and Emma Langley to compete in the race.
Banks signed a two-year contract with EF Education-TIBCO-SVB through 2023. She recently joined her new team at a training camp in Calpe that just ended on Monday.
Last year she was a member of Serratizit-WNT, but suffered a head injury in a crash at Strade Bianche in March that sidelined her season. The severe concussion prevented her from competing, and she made recovery a priority.
"It wasn't the best way to start the season. Honestly, it's pretty bad, but I'm fine (thanks to vaccinations) and will be back soon, good luck in the EF_TIBCO_SVB race," Banks posted on Twitter.
Banks is one of the team's most exciting newcomers for 2022. She turned pro with UnitedHealthcare in 2018 before moving from Bigla to Equipe Paule Ka for 2019 and 2020.
Since turning pro, Banks has had much success, including two stage wins at the Giro d'Italia Donne in 2019 and 2020 and second place at the GP de Ploué Lorient Agromération Trophee WNT in 2020.
