19-year-old Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) began his WorldTour career with a stunning solo victory at the Vuelta a AndalucĂa Lucicrista del Sol on Friday.
Near the end of the race, after a series of unexpected late attacks left a group of 30 riders off the front, Sheffield broke away with 1km remaining in the race.
Sheffield, one of several young racers signed by Ineos in recent seasons, including Carlos Rodriguez of Spain, was elated after his first win with his new team.
"It's really hard to describe how good this feels," he told a small group of reporters shortly after climbing onto the winner's podium.
"It gives me a lot of confidence because last year was a really tough year. I'm really looking forward to continuing this journey with the team and I can't thank everyone enough for their hard work today."Sheffield said his strategy came from Ineos Grenadiers' determination to prove this season that the British team is not just about winning the Tour, and from the coaches who gave him great advice in the crucial last few kilometers.
"Xavi [Zandio] and Oli [Cookson] were in my ear the whole time, saying, "This is how we decided to race this season, so throw it down."
"I couldn't hesitate, especially because the riders behind me were so aggressive. They were right behind me, but I knew as soon as I got momentum, it was game over."
"I knew I had to throw it away.
The 19-year-old said his team recognized that it was a good finish for a team with a mix of young riders, but at the same time he was racing to protect GC leader Rodriguez.
Unfortunately, Rodriguez and teammate Honatan Narvaez crashed several times in the finale. [Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Kazakstan) fell, as did a Bora rider.
"I felt really good. Outside the last kilometer, if the pack had stayed together, I wanted to go into the last corner first and hold on as long as I could.
Sheffield argued that in the grand scheme of things, a win like his shows the cycling world that Ineos Grenadiers is not only interested in the stage race over-all.
"It shows what we are capable of. We are not just a GC team and we are not just here to win the Tour. We are here to succeed in every race."
"I want to dedicate this victory to my teammates. They rode very hard today. We are a really young team, we have two older guys, but we are a really good group.
After Ruta del Sol, Sheffield will run Het Nieuwsblad and Coure Brussel-Coone. He had run Paris-Roubaix and Ghent-Wevelgem as a junior, but explained that since the opening weekend is completely different from the cobbled classic races, "we'll just have to see how it goes."
But after Friday's victory, morale for Sheffield's two one-day events in Belgium is sure to be higher than ever.
