Recently, Dylan Groenewegen, Tenniel Campbell, and several other riders from Team BikeExchange-Jayco were spotted using a new cycling computer from Giant, the team's bike sponsor, at first glance. However, after a little digging, things appear to be different from what we first saw.
In races over the past month, the team's riders have been using a variety of market-leading Garmin computers, but with the brand name hidden by the peloton's old faithful black tape. More recently, however, athletes have been spotted using computers with the large Giant logo.
Our initial thoughts were curiosity about Giant's intentions and direction. Giant already has two cycling computers, the Axact and the Neos, which, at £19.99 and £49.99 respectively, are targeted at the budget end of the market; the computer used by the BikeExchange Jayco team is neither of the above and would undoubtedly be of a higher spec - so initially it appears that Giant is taking the fight to Garmin and Wahoo in the market for the best cycling computer.
But, as mentioned, there is a twist: thanks to Setmana Ciclista Valenciana's astute photographer, we now know that the model name of this new Giant computer is the Dash M200.
"Dash" is the name that Stages uses for its cycling computers, and a brand as big as Giant would not be so blatantly ripping off a competitor's brand--ironically, the brand's e-bike computer display has a RideDash, which has been given a similar name.
We wonder if this Giant computer is a Stages spoof and, subsequently, if the Dash M200 is a yet unreleased replacement for the existing Stages Dash M50. It certainly seems likely, and checking out the design of the new computer will only increase that likelihood.
Giant is not currently advertising the Dash M200 on its website, but a quick Google search for the term brings up the image above (left).
The similarities are obvious. The four buttons placed side-by-side at the bottom of the display, the small icons above them, and the layout of the display are all design cues that further suggest that this is not a Giant computer, but a Stages in disguise.
When we wrote our World Tour Bike Guide, we were actually considering the possibility of Stages returning to the World Tour with Giant. The brand was a supplier to the UAE Team Emirates team in 2020, but without a team in 2021; when we asked BikeExchange Jayco staff in December, they remained tight-lipped about a team sponsor for 2022. But now that the race is in full swing and less than a week away from Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and opening weekend, the new computers are almost permanently installed on the front of the team's bikes.
Of course, if our guesses are correct, it doesn't necessarily mean that Giant won't market this computer as its own brand. Bontrager is doing just that with its Garmin Edge 1030 computer (open in new tab), which it also supplies to the Trek-Segafredo team.
However, the fact that Stages does not currently sell the Dash M200 computer, nor has it publicly acknowledged its existence, makes it likely that Stages would want to keep the as yet unreleased computer underwater.
