Australian neo-pro Jarrad Drizners, who suffered abdominal trauma after being involved in a crash on stage 6 of the UAE Tour, has undergone successful surgery, and the Lotto Soudal team announced in a medical update that they have dispelled earlier concerns about the possibility of further injuries.
The crash occurred just before the finish of the second and final stage of the UAE Tour. The group was in a sprint battle for sixth place. A number of riders were caught in the fall behind, and while some of them managed to pull themselves up and head towards the finish line, Drizners and EF Education - Easy Post's Sean Quinn remained on the ground.
Because of the proximity of the drop and finish line, both were listed at the bottom of the results sheet as finishers. Quinn started the final stage but did not finish, and the Drisners underwent further tests at the hospital to see if surgery was needed for the abdominal trauma. As a result, the surgery was completed.
"Jarrad Drizners has undergone successful surgery for injuries sustained in a crash on stage 6 of the UAE Tour," Lot Soudal announced in a medical update.
"There were concerns about the possibility of further injury, but after the surgery that has been ruled out. Drisner will recuperate in a hospital in the United Arab Emirates until he can return home. He will be accompanied at the hospital by a doctor from Lot Soudal and a doctor from the UAE tour."
In a social media post, Lot Soudal added, "The entire team wishes Jarad a speedy recovery."
The Drizners made their team debut at the Saudia Tour, where they joined Caleb Yuan's sprint-leading train and found immediate success. He was slated to again play a lead-out role in the UAE Tour, but due to an illness later confirmed as COVID-19, Yuan changed his plans, heading to the Tour du Var and the Cune Brassere-Cuneux. He was not the only one left out of the team lineup; only four team members, including Drizner, were headed to the Tour of the UAE.
The Drizners stepped up to Lotto Soudal this year, spending two years with Axel Merckx's Hagens Bellman Axion development team before signing a two-year deal with the WorldTour team. The 2020 U23 national road race champions will be the 2021 Flanders Tomorrow Tour, finishing fourth overall and following compatriot Harry Swinney in the Euan sprint lead-out.
Unfortunately, it appears we will have to wait a bit longer to further explore where his strengths lie.
