Lefebvre Jacobsen, Is Quick Step's Milan - Sanremo entry too subtle?

Quick Step Alphavinil sprinter Fabio Jacobsen has had one of the hottest starts in the peloton this season, but team boss Patrick Lefevere has his doubts about the sprinter's chances in next week's "Sprinters' Classic" in Milan-San Remo. He has doubts about appointing him.

The Dutch rider has already won six races in 2022, including the second stage of the Cune-Brassel-Cune and Paris-Nice. After his victory in the latter, Jacobsen said he dreams of La Classissima, but noted that this year may be too soon.

"I'm certainly dreaming of Milan-San Remo, but it may be too soon this year.

"I'm going to run Paris-Nice and see what happens after that, but I'm in good shape.

There is no doubt about his current form after beating Wout Van Aert in Orleans, but Lefebvre, writing in his column for Het Nieuwsblad (open in new tab), said he expects the race to be more aggressive than usual and that sprinters will find it difficult to survive until the Via Roma He said it would be difficult.

"In the next few days we will be discussing the problem of Fabio Jacobsen within the team. Lefebvre wrote. To take him to Milan - San Remo or not to take him to Milan - San Remo: ...... Some team leaders think it is a good idea, but at least I have my doubts". [It has nothing to do with Fabio's talent or condition. But I saw UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo Visma race this week. You don't have to study them to know what next Saturday's race will be like - they will accelerate from Capo Berta. And if they get serious at Chipressa, I don't think Fabio will survive.

"Milan-San Remo has the reputation of being a sprint classic, but it really isn't.

Lefebvre noted that one of his director sportifs, former sprinter Tom Steels, has said that having Jacobsen in the race would be a good learning experience for the 25-year-old, who has never run Milano-San Remo.

"With seven riders at the start, I don't think there will be room for that. But Julian Alaphilippe and Davide Ballerini are in good enough shape to at least have as many helpers around them as possible."

"Fabio himself wants to get on board. But my team management will have to present arguments in favor."

One rider facing a battle to get to full fitness in time for the race is Classics specialist Yves Lampert. The Belgian is one of four riders in the Quick-Step Alphavinil, who abandoned Paris-Nice midway through the race after suffering from a fever.

"In Paris-Nice, the riders who are thinking of Milan-San Remo as the main event are certainly abstaining," Lefebvre wrote.

"The last one to be suspected is Yves Lampère. [He has a fever of more than 38 degrees Celsius. He is staying at his uncle's house near Besèges and hopes to be able to train a little.
