Chaby twists handlebars, finishes 4th in Paris-Roubaix

Elise Chaby continued her excellent spring run with a fourth-place finish in Saturday's Paris-Roubaix Femme to complete the best classic campaign of her career.

The 28-year-old entered the race as the Canyon-Slam leader and missed the podium in the sprint for second and third place on the Roubaix velodrome.

In his second year with Canyon-Slam and fifth as a professional, Chaby suffered a crash on the Paris-Roubaix fam and finished the race with a twisted handlebar.

Despite the day's travails, Chaby told Cycling News at the finish that he was still a little disappointed with his final placing.

"It was a tough race," he said. I crashed in the second sector and then had to make a mental adjustment to get back in the pack."

"It's never easy to pass a crash like this and stay in the race, but I'm happy I was able to come back and stay focused. Tiff [Cromwell] stayed with me. She was with me in every cobblestone sector.

"I'm a little disappointed with fourth place in the end, but I think it's a good result for this course. I'm still getting used to this course, so I'm happy."

Chaby said she was not in the best position in the pack when Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) went solo with 32km to go and made the winning move.

That was a mistake, she said, pointing out another reason why in a race like Paris-Roubaix, positioning yourself in the front of the pack is so important.

"In fact, when she went, I was in a really bad position and didn't even know she had gone. So this was totally my fault."

"In a race like this, you have to stay ahead the whole way. Because once you make a mistake, you don't realize it and it's hard to get back. But then I was in this chase group and in a good position."

There were still more attacks from the chasing group, including Lotte Kopecky's (SD Works) attack in Carrefour de l'Arbre. But Chavy, in another predicament, returned to the velodrome with six other riders.

Chavy finished fourth, but noted that his inexperience on the track and cramps in the final sprint delayed his dash to the finish.

"I tried to listen to the radio for advice, but this is really my first time on this course," he said. 'This is only my second time out on the course, so I did my best. The sprint was super fast and I even had cramps on the last straight.

"Next time I will aim for the podium. The team has always trusted me and my teammates have always pushed me and motivated me.
