2025 Giro d'Italia, possible finish atop Stelvio

The final stage of the 2025 Giro d'Italia could finish on the summit of Mount Stelvio, half a century after the climactic showdown between Fausto Bertolio and Francisco Galdos.

Massimo Sertori, a member of the Lombardy parliament, said that a formal bid to host the 2025 Giro grand finale on the Stelvio was made during the presentation of this year's demanding 14th stage, which crosses Mortirolo and Santa Cristina and reaches Aprica

The event will mark both the 200th anniversary of the construction of the road over the pass and the role of the Valtellina area in hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"In 2025 we will celebrate 200 years of the Stelvio Pass crossing. I have already met with the governor of Alto Adige, (Arno) Compancia, and have formally requested (Mauro) Veni to hold the final stage of the Giro on the summit of the Stelvio," Sertoli said, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (open in new tab).

"The Giro will be held before the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, but the highlight will be here in Valtellina. We are working to ensure that the other stages will also be held here and that it will be a fitting celebration of the Olympics."

The 2700-meter-high Stelvio has appeared on the Giro route 13 times, including the 2013 stage over the pass to Val Martello, which was cancelled due to heavy snow.

In 1975, Giro director Vincenzo Triani made the novel decision to place the finish of the entire race atop the Stelvio, making the final stage dramatic. Although the Spaniard took the stage win on Stelvio, Bertolio also finished the same stage, winning the Giro by 41 seconds.

The Giro first climbed the Stelvio in 1953, when Fausto Coppi dropped Hugo Cobre on the final stage to Bormio to take the pink jersey. More recently, in 2012, Tomas de Gendt won the final day and made the podium.

Stelvio last appeared in 2020, when Rohan Dennis made the race-defining move on the road to Laghi di Cancano with Giro winner Tao Geoghegan Hart and runner-up Jai Hindley.
